MODAL VERBS:

MAY => poder

permission: You may open the door. (você pode abrir a porta)

possibility: I may travel tomorrow. (eu posso viajar amanhã/ talvez eu viaje amanhã)

CAN => poder

permission: You can open the door. (você pode abrir a porta)

ability: You can play the piano very well.

COULD => poderia / passado de “ can “

permission: you could open the door. (você poderia abrir a porta)

ability in the past: I could play soccer when I was a child. (eu podia/ conseguia jogar bola quando era criança)

SHOULD => DEVERIA …. You should read more. (Você deveria ler mais)

OUGHT TO => DEVERIA (same as “ should”) ….. You ought to read more. (Você deveria ler mais)

MUST => DEVER ….. You must read more. (Você deve ler mais)

Os verbos modais, na interrogativa, são invertidos.

Os verbos modais, na negativa, são seguidos por “ not”.

Example:

You must read more.

Must you read more?

You must not (mustn´t) read more.

MORE EXAMPLES. TAKE NOTES:

I can go. (eu posso ir)

I should go. (eu deveria ir ..... = I ought to go)

I must go. (eu devo ir ... = I have to go = eu tenho que ir)

I may go. (eu posso ir + eu provavelmente vou)

I might go. ( eu provavelmente vou) . yes, it is similar to " may" in this context)

I could go. (eu poderia ir)

I would go. (eu iria)

I will go. (eu irei)
